1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme SL

Ron and Gail Bodner are justifiably proud of their latest acquisition, a 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme SL with a 5-speed Getrag transmission!

Acquired with just over 99,000 miles on the odometer (not bad for a 20-year-old car!) from a neighbor, Ron indicates that it is indeed quite rare with the factory 5 speed Getrag manual transmission which is mated to a 2.8 liter V6.  Notes Ron, "I am going to do a replica and badging of it as this year (a late 1988 release) was the Indy 500 Pace car which was a custom made convertible, which is exactly like mine only black.  Frankly,  I've had enough of black cars!"  This early ‘89 was named the "W" body (actually 88 1/2 model) and GM renamed the “G” bodied V8 cars as Cutlass Supreme Classics.

Ron advises that "GM made 50 'black custom convertibles' from the LS coupe and put in a 250 HP Quad 'turbo' racing engine.  The Indianapolis 500 Pace car for 1988 it was driven by the first jet pilot to break the sound barrier, Chuck Yeager."

While it isn't a pace car Ron may decide to do a Pace car replica (not a convertible).

The former owner had the car since 1992, so it is almost a one owner car!  As an aside, Ron has done some homework and says that "GM destroyed most of the 50 pace cars produced.  A survivor sold at the Barrett Jackson in 2009 for $22,000."

A "go slow" budget restoration will begin soon on the Cutlass but for now it will be driven pretty much "as is".  The car is Ron's favorite color, “red metallic”, reminiscent of the 1967 Olds Cutlass 442 which he once owned and raced and the lower gray metallic trim reminds him of the 1984 Hurst Olds he had a few years ago.

Here's the car sporting "new" Oldsmobile five-spoke rims with 215/50-16 tires.

This is not Ron's first Oldsmobile: he had a 1969 Olds 442 which was also red with a “black” vinyl roof, purchased new from Holiday Chev Olds (now defunct) in Winnipeg.

Ron's Buick-Pontiac-Oldsmobile tally now over the last 52 years, in order of ownership, have been:  Oldsmobile 4 (1969 442 new; 1967 4-4-2 restored; 1984 Hurst Olds restored, 1989 Olds Supreme); Pontiac 4 (1962 new, 1965 new, 1962 restored, 1997 GTP new); and his first car was a 1952 Buick Custom 4 door (nosed, decked, fender skirts, spinner disks, exhaust cut out) which he bought used in 1960.
